It’s 5 p.m., it’s already dark, and the rain hasn’t stopped since breakfast. Your couch looks a lot more inviting than the gym. Sound familiar? If you live in Surrey or North Delta, you know this feeling well. Our winters are long, grey, and wet. The good news is that winter workout motivation isn’t something you either have or don’t. You can build it with a few smart habits.
Here’s how to keep showing up from November to March and walk into spring stronger than you left fall.
Shorter days and less sunlight can drag down your energy and mood. Cold, wet weather makes leaving the house feel like a chore. On top of that, the holiday season fills your calendar with family dinners, late nights, and plenty of sweets.
None of this means you’re lazy. It simply means your environment changed, so your plan needs to change too.
Big goals like “get in the best shape of my life” are hard to chase on a cold Tuesday night. Instead, pick goals you can measure week by week. For example, aim for three workouts a week, or add one rep to your main lifts each session.
Small wins add up. Plus, crossing off a simple goal gives you a quick boost that keeps you coming back.
If you wait until you “feel like it,” winter will win almost every time. So put your gym sessions in your calendar the same way you would a work meeting. Treat them as non-negotiable.
Next, choose a time that actually fits your life. Some people love an early session before work, while others prefer training after the kids are in bed. All-Inclusive members at Flex get 24-hour access, so shift workers and night owls can train whenever their schedule allows. You can compare all the options on our membership page.
This one sounds simple, but it works. Lay out your gym clothes, fill your water bottle, and leave your bag by the door. When it’s pouring outside, every small barrier matters. Remove them, and it becomes much easier to grab your bag and go.
Let’s be honest: one of the best parts of training in winter is warming up afterwards. At Flex, you can finish your workout in our infrared saunas, then try the cold plunge if you’re feeling brave. Many members say this recovery routine is what gets them out the door on the gloomiest days. Learn more about our ice tub and saunas.
Accountability is one of the strongest tools for building winter workout motivation. A workout partner won’t let you skip easily, and you won’t want to let them down. If none of your friends go to the gym, consider booking a few sessions with a coach. Either way, someone is expecting you, and that makes a real difference.
Life happens. You’ll get sick, travel for the holidays, or simply have a rough week. That’s normal. The key is to get back in as soon as you can, even if it’s just a 20-minute session. A short workout is always better than none, and it keeps the habit alive.
Consistency isn’t about perfect weeks. It’s about showing up more often than you skip. Set small goals, schedule your sessions, remove the barriers, and give yourself something to look forward to. Do that, and you’ll get through Surrey’s rainy season feeling strong instead of stuck.
